Method

Preparation of Sides

  1. 1

    French Fries

Peel and cut potatoes into fry shapes. Soak in cold water for 30 minutes, then pat dry. Heat oil in a deep fryer to 350°F (175°C) and fry the potatoes until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.

  2. 2

    Cornbread

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). In a bowl, mix 1 cup cornmeal, 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tbsp baking powder, and 1/2 tsp salt. In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup milk, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, and 2 eggs. Combine wet and dry ingredients and pour into a greased loaf pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden.

  3. 3

    Onion Rings

Slice onions into rings. In a bowl, mix 1 cup flour, 1 tsp paprika, 1 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp black pepper. Dip onion rings in milk, then coat with the flour mixture. Heat oil to 375°F (190°C) and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

  4. 4

    Cole Slaw

In a bowl, combine 4 cups shredded cabbage, 1 cup shredded carrots, and 1/2 cup mayonnaise. Add 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 tbsp sugar, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.

  5. 5

    Potato Salad

Boil 4 cups of diced potatoes until tender. Drain and let cool. In a bowl, mix with 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1 tbsp mustard, 1/4 cup chopped onion, 1/4 cup diced celery, and salt and pepper to taste. Chill before serving.

  6. 6

    Baked Beans

In a pot, combine 2 cups canned baked beans, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup ketchup, and 1 tbsp mustard. Simmer over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  7. 7

    Green Salad

In a salad bowl, mix 4 cups of your favorite greens (lettuce, spinach, etc.) with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and dressing of your choice. Toss and serve.

  8. 8

    Green Beans

Trim the ends of 2 cups green beans. Boil in salted water for 5-7 minutes until tender. Drain and toss with 1 tbsp olive oil and a pinch of salt.

  9. 9

    Mac & Cheese

Cook 2 cups elbow macaroni according to package instructions. In a saucepan, melt 1/4 cup butter, stir in 1/4 cup flour, and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add 2 cups milk, stirring until thickened. Add 2 cups shredded cheese and stir until melted. Mix with cooked macaroni and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes.

  10. 10

    Pig Candy

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lay bacon strips on a baking sheet and sprinkle with brown sugar and black pepper. Bake for 20-25 minutes until crispy. Let cool and cut into pieces.
