Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure it's hot when you put in the cornbread batter.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir until well mixed.

  3. 3

    Mix Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and melted butter until well combined.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; some lumps are okay.

Baking

  1. 5

    Prepare the Baking Dish

Grease an 8-inch square baking dish or a cast-iron skillet with butter or cooking spray.

  2. 6

    Pour Batter and Bake

Pour the cornbread batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  3. 7

    Cool and Serve

Once baked, remove the cornbread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Cut into squares and serve warm.
