Meatballs

Marinara Sauce

Method

Meatballs

  1. 1

    Prepare Meatball Mixture

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  2. 2

    Form Meatballs

Using your hands, form the mixture into 12 equally sized meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter.

  3. 3

    Cook Meatballs

In a skillet over medium heat, add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Marinara Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté Onions and Garlic

In the same skillet used for the meatballs, add olive oil and heat over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.

  3. 6

    Combine Meatballs with Sauce

Return the cooked meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the sauce for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Sub Assembly

  1. 7

    Prepare Sub Rolls

While the meatballs are simmering, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut the sub rolls lengthwise without cutting all the way through.

  2. 8

    Assemble Sub

Place 3 meatballs in each sub roll, spooning marinara sauce over the top. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese generously on each sub.

  3. 9

    Bake Subs

Place the assembled subs on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  4. 10

    Garnish and Serve

Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, and serve immediately.
