Base Gelato Ingredients

Method

Prepare the Gelato Base

  1. 1

    Heat the Milk and Cream

In a saucepan, combine the whole milk and heavy cream. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it is warm but not boiling, stirring occasionally.

  2. 2

    Whisk Egg Yolks and Sugar

In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and granulated sugar together until they are pale and creamy.

  3. 3

    Temper the Egg Mixture

Slowly pour the warm milk and cream mixture into the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling. Once combined, return the mixture to the saucepan.

  4. 4

    Cook the Mixture

Cook over low heat, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 10-15 minutes). Do not allow it to boil.

  5. 5

    Add Vanilla Extract

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.

Flavor the Gelato

  1. 6

    Incorporate Coffee

Once the base has cooled, stir in the brewed coffee, dark chocolate, almond extract, and orange zest until evenly combined.

  2. 7

    Chill the Mixture

Cover the mixture and refrigerate for at least 2-4 hours, or until fully chilled.

Churn and Freeze

  1. 8

    Churn the Gelato

Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.

  2. 9

    Freeze the Gelato

Transfer the gelato to an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm.

Serve with Toppings

  1. 10

    Prepare the Toppings

Before serving, whip the cream until soft peaks form. You can also prepare chocolate shavings and maraschino cherries.

  2. 11

    Serve the Gelato

Scoop the gelato into bowls or cones, top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and maraschino cherries. Enjoy your Coppa Spagnola Gelato!
