Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Mostaccioli

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the mostaccioli pasta and cook until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Sauce Preparation

  1. 2

    Make the Sauce

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

  2. 3

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Cheese Mixture Preparation

  1. 4

    Prepare the Cheese Mixture

In a large bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, grated Parmesan cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese, and chopped basil. Mix until well combined.

Assembly

  1. 5

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked mostaccioli with the tomato sauce. Mix until the pasta is evenly coated.

  2. 6

    Layer the Ingredients

Spread half of the pasta and sauce mixture in the bottom of a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Spoon the cheese mixture over the pasta, then top with the remaining pasta and sauce mixture.

  3. 7

    Add Toppings

Sprinkle the remaining shredded mozzarella cheese and grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.

Baking

  1. 8

    Bake the Mostaccioli

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
