Fried Calamari
Method
Fried Calamari Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Ingredients
Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. Set aside.
- 2
Mix the Breading
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to ensure the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
- 3
Coat the Calamari
Dredge the calamari rings in the flour mixture, making sure each ring is fully coated. Shake off any excess flour and set the coated rings aside on a plate.
- 4
Prepare the Shishito Peppers
Rinse the shishito peppers under cold water and dry them with paper towels. Set aside.
- 5
Heat the Oil
In a large, deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a cooking thermometer for accuracy.
- 6
Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches. Do not overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until the rings are golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- 7
Fry the Shishito Peppers
In the same hot oil, add the shishito peppers and fry for about 1-2 minutes until they blister and are slightly charred. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- 8
Serve
Arrange the fried calamari and shishito peppers on a serving platter. Serve with lemon wedges and your choice of spicy aioli for dipping.
