Method

Meat Filling Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Meat

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add Vegetables

Stir in the diced carrot, diced celery, and minced garlic. Cook for another 5 minutes until the vegetables start to soften.

  3. 3

    Brown the Meat

Add the ground beef or lamb, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

  4. 4

    Add Broth and Season

Stir in the frozen peas, beef or vegetable broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes until slightly thickened.

Mashed Potatoes Preparation

  1. 5

    Boil the Potatoes

While the meat filling is simmering, place the chopped potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt, bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 15-20 minutes until tender.

  2. 6

    Mash the Potatoes

Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, then mash until smooth. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 7

    Layer the Filling

Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F). In a baking dish, layer the meat filling evenly across the bottom.

  2. 8

    Add Mashed Potatoes

Spread the mashed potatoes over the meat filling, smoothing it out with a spatula.

  3. 9

    Bake

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.

  4. 10

    Serve

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your delicious Shepherd's Pie!
