Method
Root Beer Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Root Beer Base
In a large pot, combine 4 cups of water, 1 cup of brown sugar, and 1 cup of granulated sugar. Bring this mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly until the sugars are completely dissolved.
- 2
- 3
Steep the Mixture
Cover the pot and let the mixture steep for about 30 minutes. This allows the flavors to infuse into the liquid.
- 4
Strain the Mixture
After 30 minutes, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve to remove the solid ingredients. You should have a clear root beer base.
- 5
Add Yeast
While the root beer base is still warm (not hot), sprinkle in the active dry yeast. Stir gently to combine and let sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Carbonation Process
- 6
Bottling the Root Beer
In clean, sterilized bottles, pour the root beer base, leaving about an inch of headspace at the top of each bottle. Add 2 cups of cold water to each bottle to dilute the mixture slightly.
- 7
Seal the Bottles
Cap the bottles tightly to prevent any gas from escaping, which is essential for carbonation.
- 8
- 9
Chill and Serve
After 48 hours, refrigerate the root beer for at least 4 hours before serving. Serve over ice cubes for a refreshing drink.
