Method

Preparing the Gyro Meat

  1. 1

    Mix the Meat

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground lamb and ground beef. Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, oregano, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.

  2. 2

    Form the Meat

Shape the meat mixture into a loaf or a compact round shape. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 3

    Cook the Meat

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Drizzle olive oil over the meat and bake for 45-50 minutes or until the meat is cooked through and has an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).

  4. 4

    Rest the Meat

Remove the meat from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing.

  5. 5

    Slice the Meat

Using a sharp knife, slice the meat thinly for serving.

Making the Tzatziki Sauce

  1. 6

    Prepare the Cucumber

Grate the cucumber using a box grater or food processor. Squeeze out excess moisture using a clean kitchen towel.

  2. 7

    Mix the Sauce

In a bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, lemon juice, chopped dill, and salt. Stir well until all ingredients are mixed.

  3. 8

    Chill the Sauce

Cover and refrigerate the tzatziki sauce for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

Assembling the Gyro Plate

  1. 9

    Warm the Pita

If desired, warm the pita bread in the oven or on a skillet until soft and pliable.

  2. 10

    Build the Plate

On each plate, place a warm pita, and top with sliced gyro meat, diced tomato, red onion, and shredded lettuce.

  3. 11

    Serve with Tzatziki

Drizzle or serve the tzatziki sauce on the side. Enjoy your gyro plate!
