Method

Preparing the Potatoes

  1. 1

    Wash and Peel

Wash the russet potatoes thoroughly under cold running water. Peel the potatoes using a vegetable peeler.

  2. 2

    Cut into Fries

Cut each potato into thin strips, about 1/4 inch thick. Try to keep the size consistent for even cooking.

  3. 3

    Soak in Water

Place the cut fries in a large bowl of cold water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch.

Frying the Potatoes

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Use a thermometer to check that the oil reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Dry the Fries

After soaking, drain the fries and pat them dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This helps them become crispy.

  3. 6

    Fry the Potatoes

Carefully add a handful of fries to the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry in batches for about 4-6 minutes or until golden brown.

  4. 7

    Drain and Season

Remove the fries from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Immediately sprinkle with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to taste.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve Hot

Serve the fries hot as a side dish or snack. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauces.
