Ingredients for Sticky Rice

Method

Preparation Directions for Sticky Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse and Soak the Rice

Place the glutinous rice in a large bowl and rinse it under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch. After rinsing, add enough water to cover the rice and let it soak for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  2. 2

    Drain the Rice

After soaking, drain the rice using a fine mesh sieve. Shake off any excess water.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Steamer

Fill a steamer pot with water and bring it to a simmer. Line the steamer basket with cheesecloth or banana leaves to prevent the rice from falling through.

  4. 4

    Steam the Rice

Spread the drained rice evenly in the lined steamer basket. Cover with a lid and steam for about 25-30 minutes, or until the rice is translucent and tender.

  5. 5

    Prepare Coconut Sauce

While the rice is steaming, combine the coconut milk, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until the sugar and salt dissolve completely. Do not boil.

  6. 6

    Combine Rice and Coconut Sauce

Once the rice is done steaming, transfer it to a large bowl and pour about half of the coconut sauce over the rice. Stir gently to combine, then let it sit for about 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.

  7. 7

    Serve

Spoon the sticky rice onto serving plates or bowls. Drizzle the remaining coconut sauce over the top and sprinkle with sesame seeds, if using. Serve warm.
