Preparation
1. Prepare the Ingredients
Gather all your ingredients: sourdough bread, sharp cheddar cheese, gruyère cheese, unsalted butter, and optional add-ons like tomatoes, fresh basil, and avocado.
2. Slice the Tomatoes and Avocado
If using, slice the whole tomato and avocado into thin slices. Set aside for later.

3. Butter the Bread
Spread 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter on one side of each slice of sourdough bread.
4. Assemble the Sandwich
On the non-buttered side of two slices, layer 2 slices of sharp cheddar cheese and 2 slices of gruyère cheese. If using, add the sliced tomatoes, fresh basil, and avocado on top of the cheese.
5. Top with Bread
Place the remaining slices of bread on top, buttered side facing out.
6. Grill the Sandwich
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Once hot, place the sandwich in the skillet. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Serving
7. Slice and Serve
Once grilled to perfection, remove the sandwich from the skillet. Let it cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve immediately.
