In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Gradually whisk in the beer until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. Set aside for 15 minutes.

Heat the oil
In a deep frying pan or a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Batter the cod
Dip each cod fillet into the prepared batter, ensuring it is fully coated.

Fry the cod
Carefully place the battered cod fillets in the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary. Fry for about 5-7 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.

In a separate deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil for frying the fries over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Carefully add the cut potatoes to the hot oil in batches. Fry for about 4-6 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels, then season with salt.
