Pasta

Toppings (optional)

Method

Preparing the Pasta

  1. 1

    Cook the Pasta

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually around 8-10 minutes. Drain the pasta and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 2

    Make a Roux

In the same pot, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Once melted, stir in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and cook for about 1 minute until bubbly and slightly golden.

  2. 3

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens slightly, about 3-4 minutes.

  3. 4

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Reduce heat to low and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of mustard powder, mixing until fully incorporated.

Combining and Serving

  1. 5

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained pasta to the cheese sauce, stirring gently to coat all the macaroni.

  2. 6

    Prepare Toppings

If desired, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs with 1 cup of grated Parmesan cheese and sprinkle over the macaroni and cheese. Optionally, add paprika on top for extra flavor.

  3. 7

    Bake (optional)

For a baked version, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the macaroni and cheese to a baking dish, top with the breadcrumb mixture, and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly.

  4. 8

    Serve

Remove from the oven (if baked) and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your homemade mac and cheese!
