Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the Potatoes

Wash the Russet potatoes thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt. Peel the potatoes using a vegetable peeler, if desired. Cut the potatoes into thin strips, about 1/4 inch wide, to create the classic French fry shape.

  2. 2

    Soak the Potatoes

Place the cut potato strips in a large bowl of cold water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to remove excess starch, which helps achieve a crispier texture. After soaking, drain the potatoes and pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep pot or a deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a thermometer to check the temperature for accuracy.

  4. 4

    Fry the Potatoes

Working in small batches, carefully add the dried potato strips to the hot oil. Fry for about 4-5 minutes, or until the fries are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  5. 5

    Season the Fries

While the fries are still hot, season them with salt and black pepper to taste for added flavor. Toss gently to ensure even coating.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve the crispy French fries hot, either on their own or with your favorite dipping sauces.
