Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the white rice in a fine-mesh strainer or bowl. Rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Measure Water

In a medium saucepan, measure out 4 cups of water. If you prefer seasoned rice, you can add 1 tsp of salt and 1 tbsp of butter to the water at this stage.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Combine Rice and Water

Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan with the measured water. Stir briefly to ensure the rice is evenly distributed.

  2. 4

    Bring to a Boil

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil.

  3. 5

    Simmer the Rice

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Let the rice simmer for 18-20 minutes without lifting the lid.

  4. 6

    Finish Cooking

After 18-20 minutes, remove the saucepan from heat. Keep the lid on and let the rice sit for an additional 5-10 minutes to finish steaming.

  5. 7

    Fluff and Serve

Remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice. Serve warm as a side to your favorite meal.
