Method

Meatball Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix the Meatball Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.

  2. 2

    Shape the Meatballs

Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs, approximately 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 3

    Chill the Meatballs

Cover the baking sheet with plastic wrap and refrigerate the meatballs for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

Sauce Preparation

  1. 4

    Sauté the Onions and Garlic

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for about 15 minutes.

  3. 6

    Cook the Meatballs

Carefully add the chilled meatballs to the sauce. Cover the skillet and let the meatballs cook in the sauce for about 25-30 minutes, until they are cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 160°F (70°C).

  4. 7

    Finish with Fresh Basil

Just before serving, stir in the chopped fresh basil into the sauce for added flavor.
