Dough Ingredients

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Mix the Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 2 tsp of salt. Mix well to distribute the salt evenly throughout the flour.

  2. 2

    Add Water and Starter

In a separate bowl, mix together 1.5 cups of water and 0.5 cups of sourdough starter until fully incorporated. Pour this mixture into the flour and salt mix.

  3. 3

    Combine the Dough

Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix the ingredients together until no dry flour remains. The dough will be sticky and shaggy.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10-15 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise at room temperature for 4-8 hours or until it has doubled in size.

  6. 6

    Shape the Dough

Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a floured surface. Gently stretch and fold the dough into a round shape. Let it rest for 15 minutes.

  7. 7

    Final Rise

Place the shaped dough into a proofing basket or bowl lined with a floured kitchen towel. Cover and let it rise for another 2-4 hours.

  8. 8

    Preheat the Oven

About 30 minutes before baking, preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). If using a baking stone, place it in the oven to heat.

  9. 9

    Bake the Bread

Carefully transfer the dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet or directly onto the hot baking stone. Score the top with a sharp knife and bake for 30-40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.

  10. 10

    Cool the Bread

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least an hour before slicing.
