Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves.

  2. 2

    Cook the Caramel

Allow the mixture to come to a boil without stirring. Continue boiling until the mixture turns a golden brown color, about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Pour the Caramel

Quickly pour the caramel into a round cake pan or flan mold, tilting the pan to evenly coat the bottom. Set aside to cool and harden.

Custard Preparation

  1. 4

    Blend the Custard Ingredients

In a blender, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth and well combined.

  2. 5

    Pour the Custard Mixture

Carefully pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the pan.

  3. 6

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the flan pan in a larger baking dish. Fill the baking dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan pan.

  4. 7

    Bake the Flan

Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes, or until the custard is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

  5. 8

    Cool the Flan

Remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight.

  6. 9

    Serve

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Invert onto a large plate, allowing the caramel sauce to drizzle over the flan.
