Preparation Instructions
Make the Caramel
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the granulated sugar. Stir constantly until the sugar is completely melted and turns a golden amber color. Quickly pour the caramel into a 9-inch round cake pan, tilting the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
Combine and Bake
Pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the cake pan. Place the cake pan in a larger baking dish and fill the dish with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the cake pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 50-60 minutes, or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
Cool and Serve
Remove the flan from the oven and allow it to cool in the water bath for about 30 minutes. Then, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert it onto a serving plate to let the caramel sauce drizzle over the top.
