For the Mozzarella Sticks

Prepare the Cheese
Cut the mozzarella cheese into 1/2-inch thick sticks, about 3 inches long.

Bread the Cheese Sticks
Dip each mozzarella stick first in the flour, then the egg, and finally coat it with the breadcrumb mixture. Press firmly to ensure the breadcrumbs stick.

Chill the Sticks
Place the breaded mozzarella sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

Heat the Oil
In a deep pot or fryer, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).

Fry the Cheese Sticks
Carefully place a few mozzarella sticks in the hot oil and fry for about 2-3 minutes until they are golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Cook the Tomatoes
Add the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve
Once the sauce has thickened, remove from heat. Serve the mozzarella sticks hot with marinara sauce for dipping.
