Custard Ingredients
Method
Preparation Steps
- 1
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). This low temperature will help to gently cook the custard.
- 2
Whisk the Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, crack the 4 large eggs and add 3 tablespoons of sugar. Whisk together until the mixture is well-combined and slightly frothy.
- 3
Combine Milk and Cream
In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of heavy cream. Heat over medium heat until warmed but not boiling. Remove from heat once it's warm.
- 4
- 5
Strain the Mixture
Using a fine-mesh sieve, strain the custard mixture into another bowl to remove any lumps or coagulated bits of egg.
- 6
Prepare the Baking Dish
Pour the strained custard mixture into a baking dish or individual ramekins. If using a baking dish, ensure it's deep enough to hold the custard.
- 7
Create a Water Bath
Place the baking dish or ramekins into a larger baking pan. Fill the larger pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the custard dish. This water bath helps to cook the custard evenly.
- 8
Bake the Custard
Carefully place the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 40-50 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
- 9
Cool and Serve
Once baked, remove the custard from the oven and allow it to cool at room temperature. Then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. Serve chilled, optionally garnished with fresh fruit or a sprinkle of additional sugar.
