Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the long-grain white rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water. Rinse until the water runs clear, about 1-2 minutes. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Measure Water

In a medium saucepan, measure out 2 cups of water. This will be used to steam the rice.

  3. 3

    Add Salt

Add 0.5 teaspoon of salt to the measured water. Stir gently to dissolve the salt.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Combine Rice and Water

After rinsing, add the rinsed rice to the saucepan with salted water.

  2. 5

    Bring to Boil

Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low.

  3. 6

    Cover and Simmer

Cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid and let the rice simmer on low heat for about 18-20 minutes. Do not lift the lid during cooking, as this allows steam to escape.

  4. 7

    Check Rice

After 18 minutes, check the rice. If all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender, it’s done. If not, cover and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

  5. 8

    Fluff and Serve

Once the rice is cooked, remove the saucepan from heat. Let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. Then, use a fork to fluff the rice gently before serving.
