Sushi Rice

Fillings

Nori and Extras

Method

Prepare Sushi Rice

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.

  2. 2

    Cook the Rice

In a rice cooker or pot, combine the rinsed sushi rice and 2.5 cups of water. Cook according to the rice cooker's instructions or bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes until the water is absorbed.

  3. 3

    Season the Rice

Once cooked, transfer the rice to a large bowl. In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Gently fold this mixture into the rice while fanning it to cool it down.

Prepare Fillings

  1. 4

    Slice Vegetables

Thinly slice the avocado, cucumber, and carrot into long strips.

  2. 5

    Prepare Proteins

If using, slice the sashimi-grade salmon and tuna into thin strips for easy rolling.

  3. 6

    Prepare Crab Sticks

Pull apart the crab sticks into thin strips.

  4. 7

    Prepare Cream Cheese

Slice the cream cheese into thin strips.

Assemble the Rolls

  1. 8

    Lay the Nori

Place a sheet of nori shiny side down on a bamboo sushi mat.

  2. 9

    Spread the Rice

Wet your hands to prevent sticking. Take about a handful of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch space at the top.

  3. 10

    Add Fillings

Place your choice of fillings (vegetables, crab, salmon, tuna, and cream cheese) in a line along the bottom edge of the rice.

  4. 11

    Roll the Sushi

Lift the edge of the mat and roll it over the fillings tightly. Continue rolling until the nori is sealed. Use a little water to seal the edge.

Slice and Serve

  1. 12

    Slice the Rolls

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into bite-sized pieces. Wet the knife in between cuts to prevent sticking.

  2. 13

    Serve

Arrange the sushi rolls on a plate and serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.
