Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

    Prepare the Baking Dish

Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with some melted butter.

  3. 3

    Melt the Butter

In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat. Keep it warm.

Filling Preparation

  1. 4

    Mix the Filling

In a large bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, chopped pistachios, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well.

Layering the Baklava

  1. 5

    Layer the Filo Dough

Place one sheet of filo dough in the prepared baking dish, brushing it lightly with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering a total of 8 sheets, brushing each with butter.

  2. 6

    Add the Filling

Sprinkle 1/4 of the nut mixture evenly over the layered filo.

  3. 7

    Continue Layering

Continue layering filo sheets (8 more, each brushed with butter), followed by another 1/4 of the nut mixture. Repeat until all filling is used, finishing with 8 sheets of buttered filo on top.

Baking

  1. 8

    Cut the Baklava

Before baking, use a sharp knife to cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.

  2. 9

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Making the Syrup

  1. 10

    Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 cup of water, honey, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes.

  2. 11

    Cool the Syrup

Remove from heat and let the syrup cool while the baklava finishes baking.

Finishing Touches

  1. 12

    Add Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over it, ensuring it seeps into all the cuts.

  2. 13

    Cool and Serve

Let the baklava cool completely before serving. Cut along the original cuts to separate the pieces.
