Directions

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the long grain rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse it under cold water. Swirl the rice with your hand to remove excess starch until the water runs clear. This helps to prevent the rice from becoming gummy.

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

In a medium-sized pot, combine the rinsed rice, water, salt, and butter or oil. Stir to evenly distribute the salt and fat.

  3. 3

    Bring to a Boil

Place the pot over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn't boil over.

  4. 4

    Simmer

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer. Do not lift the lid during this time, as it will release steam.

  5. 5

    Cooking Time

Allow the rice to simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender.

  6. 6

    Fluff the Rice

After the cooking time is up, remove the pot from heat. Let it sit, covered, for another 5 minutes to allow the steam to finish cooking the rice. Then, remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve the steamed rice hot as a side dish or as a base for your favorite entrees.
