Portobello Fries

Horseradish Dipping Sauce

Method

Portobello Fries

  1. 1

    Prepare the Mushrooms

Clean the Portobello mushrooms with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. Remove the stems and scrape out the gills with a spoon. Cut the mushrooms into thick strips resembling fries.

  2. 2

    Set Up Breading Station

In three separate shallow bowls, set up a breading station: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and the third with breadcrumbs mixed with salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder.

  3. 3

    Bread the Fries

Take each Portobello strip and dip it first into the flour, ensuring it’s fully coated. Shake off any excess, then dip it into the beaten eggs, and finally coat it with the breadcrumb mixture. Place the breaded fries on a plate.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat the oil over medium-high heat. The oil should be hot enough that a breadcrumb dropped into it sizzles immediately.

  5. 5

    Fry the Fries

Carefully add the breaded Portobello strips to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Horseradish Dipping Sauce

  1. 6

    Mix the Sauce

In a medium bowl, combine the sour cream, prepared horseradish, Dijon mustard, and lemon juice. Stir until well blended.

  2. 7

    Season the Sauce

Taste the sauce and add salt and black pepper as needed.
