Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4-6 cups of water to a rolling boil. Add a pinch of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes until al dente. Stir occasionally.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Mac & Cheese Preparation

  1. 4

    Make Roux

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour and whisk for about 1 minute until smooth.

  2. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in 2 cups of milk, continuing to whisk until the mixture is smooth and starts to thicken, about 3-5 minutes.

  3. 6

    Add Cheese

Lower the heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and creamy. Season with 0.5 tsp salt and 0.25 tsp black pepper.

  4. 7

    Combine Pasta

Add the drained pasta to the cheese sauce, stirring until well combined. Serve warm.

Tomato Sauce Preparation

  1. 8

    Sauté Garlic

In a medium saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add 2 minced garlic cloves and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  2. 9

    Add Tomatoes

Pour in 1 can of crushed tomatoes and stir in 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, 0.5 tsp salt, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Bring to a simmer.

  3. 10

    Simmer Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.

  4. 11

    Serve

Serve the sauce over the cooked pasta, mixing well, or serve on the side.
