Prepare the Calamari
Clean the calamari by removing the outer skin and the beak. Cut the body into rings and the tentacles into smaller pieces.

Marinate
In a bowl, combine the calamari with buttermilk and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Prepare the Breading
In a separate bowl, mix together flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.

Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).

Coat the Calamari
Remove the calamari from the buttermilk and coat each piece in the flour mixture.

Fry the Calamari
Carefully place the coated calamari into the hot oil in batches, frying for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serve the calamari hot with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
