Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Rinse the Rice

Place the long grain white rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch and prevents the rice from being sticky.

  2. 2

    Measure Water

In a medium saucepan, measure 2 cups of water and add 0.5 tsp of salt. If using, add the bay leaf for additional flavor.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan with water and salt. If desired, add 1 tablespoon of butter or olive oil at this stage for extra flavor.

  2. 4

    Boil Water

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Watch carefully to prevent the water from boiling over.

  3. 5

    Simmer Rice

Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and simmer for 18-20 minutes. Do not remove the lid during this time.

  4. 6

    Check for Doneness

After 18-20 minutes, remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit, still covered, for an additional 5 minutes. This allows the rice to finish cooking and absorb any remaining moisture.

  5. 7

    Fluff and Serve

Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork. Discard the bay leaf if used, and serve warm.
