Pastitsio Preparation

Cook Pasta
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare Meat Sauce
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until softened. Add ground beef and cook until browned. Stir in tomato sauce, tomato paste, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and black pepper. Let simmer for about 15 minutes.

Combine Pasta and Sauce
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked pasta with the meat sauce. Mix well and set aside.

Layer Ingredients
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large baking dish, layer half of the pasta mixture, followed by half of the bechamel sauce, then repeat with remaining pasta and sauce. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.

Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown. Remove from the oven and let sit for 10 minutes before serving.

Combine Salad Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine diced cucumbers, tomatoes, sliced red onion, Kalamata olives, and crumbled feta cheese.

Dress Salad
In a small bowl, whisk together olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Drizzle over salad and toss to combine.
Serve

Prepare Pita
Warm the pita bread in a dry skillet or in the oven. Cut into halves or quarters for serving.

Serve a slice of pastitsio alongside a generous portion of Greek salad and warm pita bread.
