Cooking Instructions
Prepare the Onions
Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat, add the sliced onions, and sprinkle with a little salt. Sauté until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
Form the Patties
While the onions are cooking, shape the ground beef into two equal-sized patties. Season each side of the patties with salt and black pepper.
Cook the Patties
In another skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.
Assemble the Patty Melt
On one slice of rye bread, place a patty with melted Swiss cheese on top, followed by a generous amount of caramelized onions. Top with another slice of rye bread. Repeat for the second sandwich.
Serve
Remove from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot.
