Preparation

1

Rinse the Beans

Place the dried black beans in a colander and rinse them under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.

2

Soak the Beans (Optional)

Soak the rinsed beans in a large bowl of water overnight. This step is optional but helps to reduce cooking time.

Cooking

3

Cook the Beans

In a large pot, combine the rinsed (and soaked, if applicable) black beans with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer.

4

Add Aromatics

Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and bay leaf to the pot. Stir to combine.

5

Season the Beans

Add the cumin powder, black pepper, and salt to the pot. Stir well.

6

Simmer

Cover the pot and let the beans simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the beans are tender. Stir occasionally and add more water if necessary to keep the beans submerged.

7

Finish Cooking

Once the beans are tender, remove the bay leaf and stir in the olive oil. Adjust seasoning to taste.
