For the Torta Bread

Method

Prepare the Torta Bread

  1. 1

    Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, active dry yeast, salt, and sugar. Mix well.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Gradually add warm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

  5. 5

    Shape the Bread

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round ball and flatten slightly.

  6. 6

    Bake the Bread

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the shaped dough on a baking sheet and bake for about 20-25 minutes until golden.

Prepare the Meat Filling

  1. 7

    Cook the Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and bell peppers. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened.

  2. 8

    Brown the Meat

Add ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. This should take about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 9

    Season the Mixture

Stir in minced garlic, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

  4. 10

    Remove from Heat

Once the meat is fully cooked, remove the skillet from heat and set aside.

Assemble the Torta

  1. 11

    Slice the Bread

Once the torta bread is baked and slightly cooled, slice each piece horizontally without cutting all the way through.

  2. 12

    Fill the Torta

Open each torta and generously fill with the meat mixture, followed by sliced avocado, tomato, and shredded lettuce.

  3. 13

    Add Cheese and Sour Cream

Top each torta with shredded cheese and a dollop of sour cream.

  4. 14

    Serve

Serve the tortas warm and enjoy with your favorite salsa or hot sauce on the side.
