Caramel

Custard

Method

Caramel Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Caramel

In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

  2. 2

    Cook the Caramel

Once the sugar has dissolved, stop stirring and allow the mixture to boil without stirring. Cook until it turns a deep amber color, about 10-15 minutes.

  3. 3

    Cool the Caramel

Immediately pour the caramel into a 9-inch round cake pan, tilting the pan to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.

Custard Preparation

  1. 4

    Blend the Custard Ingredients

In a blender, combine the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Blend on high until smooth and well combined.

  2. 5

    Pour Custard into Pan

Carefully pour the custard mixture over the hardened caramel in the cake pan.

  3. 6

    Prepare for Baking

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the cake pan in a larger baking dish and fill the larger dish with hot water to create a water bath.

  4. 7

    Bake the Flan

Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes or until the custard is set and a knife inserted comes out clean.

  5. 8

    Cool and Refrigerate

Once baked, remove from the oven and water bath. Allow to cool at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  6. 9

    Unmold the Flan

To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it. Place a plate on top of the cake pan and invert to release the flan onto the plate.
