Method

Chicken Fried Steak

  1. 1

    Tenderize Steak

Tenderize the beef round steak until it is about 1/2 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Prepare Dredging Mixture

In a bowl, mix flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

  3. 3

    Prepare Wet Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.

  4. 4

    Dredge Steak

Dip the steak in the wet mixture, then dredge in the flour mixture until well coated.

  5. 5

    Fry Steak

In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Fry the steak for about 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Country Gravy

  1. 6

    Make Roux

In the same skillet, remove excess oil, leaving about 2 tablespoons of drippings. Add flour and whisk until golden brown.

  2. 7

    Add Milk

Slowly add milk while continuing to whisk to avoid lumps. Cook until thickened.

  3. 8

    Season Gravy

Season with salt, black pepper, and sausage drippings to taste.

Mashed Potatoes

  1. 9

    Cook Potatoes

Boil peeled and chopped potatoes in a pot of salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.

  2. 10

    Mash Potatoes

Drain and return to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and black pepper, then mash until smooth.

Dill Buttered Carrots

  1. 11

    Cook Carrots

Steam or boil the carrots until tender, about 10 minutes.

  2. 12

    Butter Carrots

In a bowl, mix melted butter, dill, and salt. Toss the cooked carrots in the mixture.
