Dough Preparation
1. Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
2. Mix Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the frothy yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
3. Knead Dough
Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Let Dough Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Filling Preparation
5. Cook Beef
In a skillet, heat a little oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and minced garlic, sauté until softened.
6. Add Meat and Veggies
Add ground beef, bell pepper, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and the vegetables are tender.
7. Add Tomato Sauce
Stir in the tomato sauce, reduce heat, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes until thickened.
Assembling and Baking
8. Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
9. Shape Dough
Once dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into circles or squares.
10. Fill and Top
Place a spoonful of the meat filling on one half of each dough piece. Sprinkle with cheddar cheese and green onions, then fold the dough over to encase the filling.
11. Bake
Place the filled dough pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
