For the Cream Mixture

Method

Prepare Coffee Mixture

  1. 1

    Brew Espresso

Brew 1 cup of strong espresso coffee and set aside to cool.

  2. 2

    Mix Coffee and Liqueur

In a shallow bowl, combine the cooled espresso coffee, coffee liqueur (if using), and 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.

Prepare Cream Mixture

  1. 3

    Whip Heavy Cream

In a large mixing bowl, beat 1 cup of heavy cream until soft peaks form.

  2. 4

    Prepare Egg Mixture

In another bowl, whisk together 3 egg yolks and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar until the mixture becomes pale and creamy.

  3. 5

    Combine Mascarpone

Gently fold in 1 cup of mascarpone cheese and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract into the whipped cream until well combined.

  4. 6

    Combine Egg Mixture

Carefully fold the egg yolk mixture into the mascarpone mixture until smooth and well combined, being careful not to deflate the whipped cream.

Assemble Tiramisu

  1. 7

    Dip Ladyfingers

Quickly dip each ladyfinger cookie into the coffee mixture, making sure not to soak them, and place them in a single layer in a rectangular dish.

  2. 8

    Layer Cream Mixture

Spread half of the cream mixture over the layer of ladyfingers, smoothing it out evenly.

  3. 9

    Repeat Layers

Repeat the process with another layer of dipped ladyfingers followed by the remaining cream mixture.

  4. 10

    Chill

Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for best results.

Serve

  1. 11

    Dust with Cocoa

Before serving, dust the top layer with cocoa powder and garnish with dark chocolate shavings if desired.

  2. 12

    Slice and Serve

Slice into squares and serve chilled.
