Method
Dough Preparation
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until well blended.
- 2
Add Wet Ingredients
Add the vegetable oil and warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough comes together.
- 3
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Cover with a clean cloth and let rest for about 30 minutes.
Frying Instructions
- 4
Heat Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
- 5
Roll Out Dough
After the dough has rested, divide it into small balls (about the size of a golf ball). Roll each ball out on a floured surface into a circle about 1/8 inch thick.
- 6
Fry Sopapillas
Carefully drop the rolled-out dough into the hot oil. Fry until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
