Method
Preparation
- 1
Rinse the Rice
Place the long-grain rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.
- 2
Measure Water
In a medium saucepan, measure out 2 cups of water. This is the standard ratio of water to rice for cooking long-grain rice.
- 3
Add Salt
Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water in the saucepan. This will enhance the flavor of the rice.
- 4
Add Optional Ingredients
If desired, add 1 tablespoon of butter or olive oil to the water for added richness and flavor.
Cooking
- 5
Bring to a Boil
Place the saucepan over high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil.
- 6
Add the Rice
Once the water is boiling, add the rinsed rice to the saucepan. Stir once to prevent sticking.
- 7
Simmer
Reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes. Do not lift the lid while it’s cooking.
- 8
Check for Doneness
After 18-20 minutes, check to see if all the water has been absorbed. If the rice is tender and fluffy, it is done. If not, cover and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Add Fresh Herbs (Optional)
If using, stir in 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh herbs for added flavor and garnish before serving.
