Method

Steak Preparation

  1. 1

    Season the Steak

Sprinkle salt and black pepper evenly over both sides of the New York strip steak.

  2. 2

    Cook the Steak

Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the steak for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or longer for desired doneness. Remove from heat and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly.

Garlic Butter Preparation

  1. 3

    Melt the Butter

In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat.

  2. 4

    Add Garlic and Parsley

Finely mince the garlic cloves and add to the melted butter. Stir in the chopped fresh parsley and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat.

Au Jus Preparation

  1. 5

    Sauté Onion

In a medium saucepan, sauté the diced small onion over medium heat until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

  2. 6

    Add Liquids

Pour in the red wine and beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and thyme.

  3. 7

    Simmer

Bring the mixture to a simmer and let cook for about 10-15 minutes until slightly reduced. Strain if desired.

Assembly

  1. 8

    Prepare the Bread

Slice the mini baguettes in half lengthwise. Brush the inside with the garlic butter mixture.

  2. 9

    Add Steak and Cheese

Layer the sliced steak and top with gruyere cheese inside each baguette.

  3. 10

    Melt the Cheese

Place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  4. 11

    Serve

Serve the mini steak French dips warm with a small bowl of au jus for dipping.
