Method
Preparing the Pasta
- 1
Cook the Elbow Macaroni
In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and the elbow macaroni. Cook according to the package instructions until al dente, about 7-8 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Making the Cheese Sauce
- 2
Create a Roux
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Once melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until the mixture is bubbling and golden.
- 3
Add Milk
Gradually add the milk to the roux, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook for about 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens.
- 4
Incorporate Cheese and Seasonings
Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, ground mustard, salt, and black pepper. Continue stirring until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
Combining and Baking
- 5
Mix Pasta and Cheese Sauce
Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is evenly coated.
- 6
Prepare Topping
In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, grated parmesan cheese, and paprika. Mix well.
- 7
Bake
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the macaroni and cheese mixture into a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumb topping over the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden and crispy.
