Preparation Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt. In a separate bowl, warm the milk and melt the butter together. Once warm, add the milk mixture to the dry ingredients. Add the egg and mix until the dough comes together.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  3. 3

    Roll and Cut the Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it out to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut out squares (about 2-3 inches wide) using a knife or a dough cutter.

  4. 4

    Fry the Beignets

In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the cut dough squares to the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

  5. 5

    Dust with Powdered Sugar

While the beignets are still warm, dust them generously with powdered sugar. Serve immediately with chicory coffee.
