Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the Moong Dal

Rinse the moong dal under running water until the water runs clear. Soak the dal in water for at least 30 minutes.

  2. 2

    Cook the Dal

In a large pot, heat the clarified butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

  3. 3

    Add Spices

Stir in the grated ginger, minced garlic, and slit green chilies. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.

  4. 4

    Add Tomatoes and Spices

Add the pureed tomatoes, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the mixture.

  5. 5

    Combine Dal and Water

Add the soaked moong dal and water to the pot. Stir well and bring to a boil.

  6. 6

    Slow Cook

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until the dal is soft and creamy.

  7. 7

    Finish with Garam Masala

Once the dal is cooked, stir in the garam masala and adjust seasoning if necessary. Cook for an additional 5 minutes.

  8. 8

    Garnish and Serve

Garnish with fresh coriander and a drizzle of clarified butter before serving. Enjoy with rice or naan.
