Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the lentils

Rinse the black lentils thoroughly in cold water until the water runs clear. Soak them in water for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  2. 2

    Cook the lentils

In a slow cooker, add the soaked lentils along with 4 cups of water. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or until the lentils are tender.

  3. 3

    Prepare the tempering

In a pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

  4. 4

    Add spices and tomatoes

Stir in the minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Sauté for another 2 minutes. Add the pureed tomato, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the mixture.

  5. 5

    Combine and simmer

Once the lentils are cooked, add the tempering to the slow cooker. Mix well and let it simmer for an additional 30 minutes on low heat.

  6. 6

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with fresh chopped cilantro before serving. Enjoy your Makani Ka Dal with rice or naan.
