California Roll Ingredients

Method

California Roll Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once cooked, let it sit covered for 10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Heat in the microwave for about 30 seconds until sugar is dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the sushi rice while it's still warm. Allow to cool slightly.

  3. 3

    Prepare Fillings

Slice the avocado and cucumber into thin strips. If using imitation crab, shred it into smaller pieces.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Rolls

Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface. Lay a sheet of nori on the mat, shiny side down. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, take about a cup of sushi rice and spread it evenly over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. Layer crab, avocado, and cucumber along the bottom edge of the rice.

  5. 5

    Roll the Sushi

Using the sushi mat, carefully roll the nori away from you, pressing gently but firmly to create a tight roll. Use the mat to shape the roll as you go. Seal the edge of the nori with a little water.

  6. 6

    Slice and Serve

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
