Pasta

Toppings (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil over high heat. Add a pinch of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions, typically around 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt Butter

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until it is fully liquid.

  2. 4

    Add Flour

Sprinkle the all-purpose flour into the melted butter, whisking continuously for about 1-2 minutes to create a roux.

  3. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue to cook for about 5 minutes, until the mixture thickens.

  4. 6

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Reduce the heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Stir until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining Pasta and Cheese Sauce

  1. 7

    Mix Together

Add the drained elbow macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until well combined.

Optional Topping

  1. 8

    Prepare Topping

If using, mix the bread crumbs and grated Parmesan cheese together in a small bowl.

  2. 9

    Add Topping

Sprinkle the topping mixture over the mac and cheese.

Finalization

  1. 10

    Serve

Serve the mac and cheese warm, either straight from the pot or after baking in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown.
