Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix dry ingredients

In a large bowl, combine 1.75 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 cups of granulated sugar, 0.75 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1.5 tsp of baking powder, 1.5 tsp of baking soda, and 1 tsp of salt. Whisk until well combined.

  3. 3

    Add wet ingredients

Add 2 large eggs, 1 cup of whole milk, 0.5 cups of vegetable oil, and 2 tsp of vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed for about 2 minutes until well blended.

  4. 4

    Incorporate boiling water

Stir in 1 cup of boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin.

  5. 5

    Bake the cakes

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the cakes

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 7

    Make the frosting

In a medium bowl, beat 1 cup of softened unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add 0.5 cups of unsweetened cocoa powder and 3 cups of powdered sugar, alternating with 0.25 cups of whole milk. Mix until smooth and fluffy.

  2. 8

    Add vanilla

Stir in 1 tsp of vanilla extract until fully combined.

  3. 9

    Frost the cake

Once the cakes are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
