Method
Preparation of Mussels
- 1
Clean the Mussels
Rinse the mussels under cold water to remove any dirt or sand. Scrub the shells with a brush and remove the beards (the fibrous strands) by pulling them off.
- 2
Check for Freshness
Discard any mussels that are open and do not close when tapped, as well as any broken shells.
Cooking the Mussels
- 3
- 4
Add White Wine
Pour in the white wine and bring to a simmer, scraping any bits from the bottom of the pot.
- 5
Add Mussels
Add the cleaned mussels to the pot, cover with a lid, and allow them to steam for about 5-7 minutes until they open. Discard any mussels that remain closed.
- 6
Incorporate Marinara Sauce
Once the mussels are opened, stir in the marinara sauce and chopped basil. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through.
Preparing the Toast
- 7
Toast the Bread
While the mussels are cooking, slice the crusty bread and drizzle each slice with olive oil. Toast the bread in a toaster or under the broiler until golden brown.
Serving
- 8
Plate the Mussels
Serve the steamed mussels in a large bowl, garnished with additional chopped basil if desired. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- 9
Serve with Toast
Accompany the mussels with the toasted bread for dipping into the sauce.
