Fried Okra Ingredients

Method

Fried Okra Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Okra

Wash the okra thoroughly, then slice them into 1/2 inch rounds.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Coat the Okra

Dip the sliced okra into the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Then, coat the okra in the cornmeal mixture, pressing lightly to ensure they are well coated.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C).

  5. 5

    Fry the Okra

Carefully add the coated okra in batches to the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally.

  6. 6

    Drain and Serve

Remove the fried okra from the oil and place on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot.
